What you need to know from Microsoft Ignite 2025

If Microsoft Ignite 2024 was the moment Copilot entered the room, then 2025 was when it started running the meeting, and followed up with action points.

This year’s Ignite was a manifesto for the future of intelligent collaboration. In the keynote, Judson Althoff set the stage as Microsoft showcased how AI, deeply embedded across Teams, is fundamentally reshaping the way we work together. Teams has evolved far beyond its roots as a simple collaboration tool. It’s now shaping up to be a truly intelligent workspace…the new virtual office!

External collaboration: The walls come down

Ignite finally delivered what many hybrid teams have been waiting for: frictionless external collaboration. Kerry Perez Heffernan introduced this update, explaining that you can now chat with anyone using just their email, with full support for Loop components and shared files, all without switching tenants. Trust labels keep things compliant, while your service offering can now extend to truly cross-organisational teamwork.

Hardware keeps up

The Teams Devices team revealed that the hardware ecosystem got smarter, too! From MAXHUB’s 200MP XBar W70 to Logitech’s ultra-fast install kits and Owl Labs’ immersive meeting gear, the range of Teams certified devices is more diverse and deployment friendly than ever. Perfect for scaling into SMBs and adapting to hybrid-first customers.

AI gets a team mentality

Perez-Heffernan also shared that Microsoft 365 Copilot now supports multi-user interactions. Think of it as AI that understands group dynamics. With Teams Mode, colleagues can co-prompt, co-edit and co-ideate within a shared AI chat, changing Copilot from a solo assistant into a team player. It’s collaborative intelligence in action, redefining the way teams brainstorm, plan, and execute projects.

Meetings become outputs

Forget about action tracking on whiteboards or sticky notes. Facilitator Agent now recognises agendas, prompts follow-ups in real-time, and nudges participants who need to weigh in (incredible). Add post call Copilot summaries pulling in insights from Microsoft Graph and the wider web, and suddenly, your meeting evolves into structured, actionable content.

Smarter admin, safer teams

Benjamin Summers showcased Copilot integrated into the Teams Admin Center, helping IT pros diagnose call quality, track permissions, and manage policy compliance with AI-assisted ease. Its admin meets insight, a major win for partners managing large scale Teams deployments.

From presence to persona

The Mesh product team showed off immersive meetings with Meta Quest support, and meeting reactions that reflect brand identity. Yes, avatars and emojis might seem playful but beneath the surface is a serious trend: customisable, branded presence in digital spaces. For partners thinking about experience design, this is your cue!

Are you ready?

We’re looking at an ecosystem where Teams Rooms are hubs of intelligence. Your role in designing, deploying, and supporting this next-gen environment just became more strategic than ever.
